focused XVII – “Free-beating Reeds“
Focussing on the Chinese mouth organ sheng

The soundscapes of the AsianArt Ensemble's 17
th concert in the “focused” series are created by the Chinese mouth organ sheng in combination with European stringed instruments, the Korean bamboo flute and Asian zithers. Founding member Wu Wei is back, after three years of traveling the world. This program is a balanced mixture of works by composers with decades of experience at the crossroads between East and West such as Toshio Hosokawa, Jia Guoping and Xu Shuya on the one hand, and new pieces by younger composers on the other hand. The oldest and the newest piece were composed 18 years apart, which gives a good overview of modern music for sheng.

focused XVIII - Plucked Strings
Focussing on the zithers koto and gayageum

The vibrating string was surely one of the first sources of sound in human history. Even so, the singing qualities of the plucked string instruments are not so prominent in Europe. The Korean zither gayageum shows us that Asian zithers are considered melodic instruments.
This concert features four premieres by composers from Finland, The Netherlands, Japan an the USA.
